Background of the Study
Simulation-based training is increasingly recognized as an effective teaching method in nursing education, providing students with a safe environment to practice and refine their clinical skills. At Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, simulation exercises are used to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and clinical practice, allowing students to develop their clinical abilities without the risk of harming real patients. Simulation-based training offers students the opportunity to engage in realistic scenarios, hone decision-making skills, and experience various clinical situations that they may not frequently encounter during traditional clinical rotations (Adebola & Olusegun, 2023).
The use of simulations in nursing education has been shown to enhance clinical confidence among students, particularly when it comes to skills such as patient assessment, medication administration, and emergency response. As nursing students gain exposure to clinical scenarios through simulations, their ability to think critically, solve problems, and manage stressful situations improves, leading to increased self-assurance when working with actual patients. Simulation-based training is also effective in enhancing communication and teamwork skills, both of which are essential for nurses working in diverse healthcare teams (Ojo et al., 2024).
This study seeks to investigate the influence of simulation-based training on nursing students' clinical confidence at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, focusing on the potential benefits and challenges of this educational approach.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the proven benefits of simulation-based training in enhancing clinical confidence, there is limited research on its specific impact on nursing students at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. While simulations provide a controlled and risk-free environment for students to practice their clinical skills, it remains unclear how this training translates into students’ confidence levels when they face real clinical situations. This study aims to explore the extent to which simulation-based training enhances students' clinical confidence and the challenges associated with its implementation.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the influence of simulation-based training on clinical confidence among nursing students at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
2. To examine the key factors that contribute to increased clinical confidence through simulation-based training.
3. To assess the challenges encountered by nursing students during simulation-based training and its impact on their confidence.
Research Questions
1. How does simulation-based training influence clinical confidence among nursing students at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital?
2. What are the key factors that contribute to increased clinical confidence through simulation-based training?
3. What challenges do nursing students face during simulation-based training, and how do these challenges affect their clinical confidence?
Research Hypotheses
1. Simulation-based training significantly enhances clinical confidence among nursing students at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
2. Factors such as the realism of simulation scenarios and instructor feedback contribute significantly to the development of clinical confidence in nursing students.
3. Challenges faced during simulation-based training negatively affect the clinical confidence of nursing students.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and will evaluate the influence of simulation-based training on their clinical confidence. Limitations include the subjectivity of self-reported confidence levels and potential variations in simulation scenarios across different student groups.
Definitions of Terms
• Simulation-based training: The use of realistic, controlled scenarios to replicate clinical situations in which nursing students practice and refine their skills.
• Clinical confidence: The level of self-assurance and competence a nursing student feels when performing clinical tasks and interacting with patients.
• Nursing education: The program designed to prepare individuals for the nursing profession, incorporating both theoretical instruction and hands-on clinical practice.
